* * * * * International workshop Between May 15th and 18th, 2006, in Bucharest was held the workshop "The limits of freedom of expression of editorial cartoonists".
The workshop wanted to concentrate the opinion of
the cartoonists, members of CRN filial from Eastern Europe, about the known
"cartoonists scandal", regarding the prophet Mohamed, cartoons published in
Denmark.
In the last months, cartoonists from eastern
European countries, have debated this problem in every country and the
opinions about this case were very diverse.
At the workshop, the participants were the leaders
of CRN Eastern Europe: Ilian Savkov (CRN Bulgaria) Alex Dimitrov (CRN Moldova)
Nikola Otas (CRN Serbia), Vladimir Kazanevsky (CRN Ukraina). Also the
cartoonist Jorge Varas-Varilla from Sweden was present. He has a very rich
experience regarding respecting the right to free expression. He was forced,
many years ago to leave his country, Chile, because of his beliefs. At this
workshop Varilla told us the general opinion of the cartoonists from the
countries of western Europe.
From the hosts, CRN Romania the people present
were: Nicolae Ionita (president CRN Europe de East), Leonte Nastase
(vice-president CRN.EE), Stefan Alexandrescu (president CRN Romania),
Cristian Mihailescu, Constantin Ciosu, Irina Iosip, Iulian Pena-Pai, Costel
Patrascan, Iulian Radu, Onea Octavian, Cristian Topan, Octavian Covaci and
Mihai Stanescu.
After long argumentative discussions the
participants reach the following conclusions:
1- The cartoonists from Eastern Europe, members of
CRN are soliters with the Danish cartoonists, authors of the cartoons that
provoked the recent scandal.
We are for the freedom of expression of every
cartoonist in the world and we are for the values of democracy.
2 - We recommend all the cartoonists in the world,
equilibrium and absence of any fanatism, and many restrenght in addressing
this issue.
3 - This being said we don't think that is
opportune to award the cartoonists in Denmark, they're cartoons lacking any
special artistic qualities. It can't be talked about courage in the case of
publishing cartoons in the Danish press, one of the most democratic countries
in the world. We think that giving an award will bring no benefice to
international cartoon, or to the cartoonists.
This conclusions were shared by all the
participants at the workshop with no exception
