La historia de Zapatos, el film turco inspirado por un
dibujo humorístico argentino

Cuando uno es niño, se hace preguntas que, si logramos recordarlas, de adultos
las convertimos en humor gráfico. O quizás, un humorista gráfico sea la persona
que sigue razonando como un niño En el año 2001- durante la peor crisis
económica en la Argentina- envié a un concurso uno de estos dibujos que
ilustraban algo que había pensado de chica. Y ganó un premio, dándole la razón a
Freud , que dice - en “ El chiste y su relación con el inconsciente” , que la
risa es un fenómeno humano que se produce cuando nos permitimos ser niños otra
vez.
En el año 200 , uno no solo se quedaba sin trabajo, sino que tus propios jefes
te llamaban preguntando si uno tenia algún trabajo para ofrecerles. Miles de
argentinos emigraron a otros países. Una amiga me ofreció trabajo en Estados
Unidos. Yo aposté a quedarme y dibujar con doble ahínco. Hacía poco había
conocido a Marlene Pohle – actual presidente general de FECO (
http://feco.info) – que había venido a hacer una muestra de humor gráfico en la
Alianza Francesa. La entrevisté para el diario Pagina 12 , y cuando Marlene supo
que yo era dibujante, me invitó a que yo formara un grupo de dibujantes que
integran la sede argentina de FECO. Asi fue como, en medio de la crisis, un
grupo de dibujantes nos organizamos y gracias a FECO tuvimos contacto con todos
los salones internacionales de humor grafico. En vez de desesperar, dibujé
desesperadamente . Los resultados fueron buenos: gané siete premios
internacionales en dos años, y empecé a ser convocada como miembro del jurado de
varios festivales. .
Cuando lei las bases del concurso turco Aydin Dogan Vakfi, uno de los más
importantes a nivel mundial, revisé una vieja carpeta de dibujos humorísticos
basados en ideas que recuerdo de mi infancia , y encontré ese dibujo hecho en
blanco y negro . A pesar de que lo vi un poco ingenuo, lo rehice en acuarelas
pensando que esa idea era original, y que no la había visto en ningún lado antes
. Porque lo peor en humor grafico es repetir ideas ya vistas.
Hice el dibujo en la mesa de la cocina de mi casa, corriendo los platos sucios
del almuerzo y apurando a los chicos para que se fueran a la escuela. Lo lleve
al correo sin creer que llegaría a tiempo a Turquía. A los pocas semanas recibí
un correo electrónico de Ankara diciendo que había ganado un premio y que estaba
invitada a recibirlo en Noviembre del 2001, con pasaje y estadía pagos.
Viajé en American Airlines con escala en Nueva York, a menos de dos meses
después del atentado a las Torres Gemelas. Me daba miedo a volar a Nueva York en
esa empresa, pero el humorista grafico holandés Peter Nieuwendijk (el también un
miembro de FECO) me tranquilizó diciendo “No va a pasar por segunda vez en dos
meses” , y subí al avión . Hable con los tripulantes de American Airlines, que
me dijeron que volaban sin pánico, porque esas cosas como el tanteado del 11 del
9 son cosas del destino, DE todos modos, la empresa les había dado un cursos
antiterrorismo de 45 minutos, y el que quería podía pedir licencia para no
volara y superara el trauma , pero nadie la pedía para no perder los viáticos.
Lo contaban cortando los cartones de jugo con trinchetas gigantes, mientras a
los pasajeros nos habían sacado hasta las pincitas de depilar y los alicates
para uñas. Apenas llegue a Nueva York – una ciudad desolada y enlutada - fui a
ver Ground Zero, la zona de destrucción, que aun humeaba y olía como la quema de
un basural. Por todas las calles, postes y afiches repletos de fotocopias color
con las caras de rostros desaparecidos en el desastre. Aproveche para sacar
fotos y hacer una nota que salio publicada en la revista Para Ti.
Cuando llegue a Turquía, los colegas invitados me esperaban para cenar a la luz
de las velas, y junto a un concierto barroco de flauta y arpas , en el Ankara
Milton. Allí tuve el honor de conocer multipremiados colegas reconocidos en todo
el mundo, como el islandés Eythor Stefansson , el rumano Julian Pena Pai, el
ucraniano Oleg Dergatchov, el polaco Andrzej Graniak y el iraní Rezaei Paiman, y
colegas turcos de enorme trayectoria, como Tan Oral . Nos trataron como
sultanes, y el premio nos fue entregado en una hermosa ceremonia en un teatro de
la Belle Époque , contando con la presencia del Presidente del parlamento Turco
y el Ministro de Cultura de Turquía Uno de los premios fue una plaqueta con mi
dibujo completo grabado en bronce, como para que dure una eternidad.
A principios del año 2006 recibí un correo electrónico de un joven director de
cine turco, Burak Apaydin diciendo que una amigo suyo le había enviado mi dibujo
por mail, y que me pedia permiso para hacer una película con él . le pregunte
que tipo de película, y me dijo “ quiero contar la historia de lo que paso antes
del dibujo”, con actores y que el cuadro final seria la escena de mi dibujo. Por
pura curiosidad. le di mi permiso, a cambio de que m enviara la película
terminada por correo. Habían pasado largos meses tratando de descubrir quien era
el autor de dibujo, porque la versión que tenían de el era de baja resolución y
la firma no se distinguía. Les costó meses conseguir una versión de mayor
resolución para descubrir que la autora era yo.
Luego Burak me dijo que cuando les comunico a sus compañeros de equipo de
filmación que yo les autorizaba el uso del dibujo, “todos sentimos que nuestras
cabezas tocaban el techo” (quisieron decir que “tocaron el cielo con las manos”).
En Julio de 2007, Burak Apaydin se comunicó conmigo para decirme que la película
estaba acabada desde hacía meses, que la habían exhibido en concursos de
cortometrajes y se había emitido en la televisión turca con gran éxito, pero que
no había podido enviarme el video por correo a la Argentina, por falta de
fondos. Entonces le sugerí que lo subiera a You Tube. Lo hizo, y quedé impactada
con el resultado, por lo cual envié el link a colegas, que a su vez lo
reenviaron a sus amigos. A partir de aquí recibí comentarios alentadores de
todas partes. Tantos, y tan conmovedores, que me animé a seguir reenviando la
invitación a ver el film en You Tube. Dibujantes de todo el mundo, desde India a
China, pasando por Irán, Brasil y Colombia, me expresaban su emoción al ver el
film y me pedían permiso para postear el film en sus blogs.
El 1 de Agosto de 2007 el diario Clarín reprodujo el dibujo con un nota titulada
“De dibujo argentino a filme turco: un cineasta lo subió a YouTube y en cinco
dias tuvo dos mil visitas”

comunicaron conmigo diciendo que esta combinación de fime y cartoon parece ser
una nueva veta en el arte de hacer humor gráfico. Solo una semana después de
estar posteado e link de Zapatos en You Tuve, lo habían visitado más de 2400
personas y había sido elegido favorito 30 veces. Ahora a su director lo están
invitando a participar con este corto de un festival de cortometrajes en Banja
Luka , Bosnia- Herzegovina.
El por qué de su éxito
El trabajo del cineasta esta muy bien hecho. Les llevo mas de un mes encontrara
el actor ideal. Finalmente lo encontraron en Fehmi Zubeyir Suzen, un actor que
perdió una pierna en el ejercito turco, y actualmente es jugador de basquet en
una liga e discapacitados. Burak Apaydin trabajó un día entero en la filmación
de esta película con un equipo de filmación de 13 personas entre los que quiere
destacar los aportes de Harun Halici y de Didem Acar.”Trabajamos todos muy duro
pero disfrutaron cada minuto de la filmación”,dice el director.. Cuando tenían
el film terminado, fueron a un concierto de la famosísima pianista clásica y de
jazz y compositora turca Gulden Goksen.) Los realizadores fueron a ver un
concierto de ella , y a la salida le entregaron un tape con el film, y le
confesaron su interés en que ella hiciera la música original. Gulden tiene una
trayectoria importante, nacida como niña prodigio , interprete de Prokofiev,
solista en orquestas de varios países y ya había ganado premios como autora de
la música de cortometrajes. Ella les dijo que si le gustaba la película, haría
la música. Y luego de ver el film, aceptó. Creemos que la música de Gulden es
parte crucial del éxito de la película y de cómo ha conmovió a todos. Ella supo
llenar de sentimiento el film, desde el clima inicial de intriga y complicidad
hasta el desenlace lleno de ternura . Burak y yo le estamos particularmente

El corto se filmó íntegramente en Ankara, capital de Turquía . La edición llevó
un mes más. Se realizó en Formato DV color, dura 4, 26 minutos el sistema de
edicion fue Final Cut .
“ Mis trabajos anteriores fueron muy oscuros comparados con Zapatos”, confiesa
Burak Apaydin” Me encantó poder decir algo acerca del mundo en este film. En mis
películas anteriores yo hablaba de olitica y de la situación de Turquía. Ahora
me dejo llevar por las cosas que me atrapan, como fue este dibujo. Me sentí muy
atraído por el dibujo, que me dio toda la inspiración. Creo que Zapatos es un
hito en mi carrera. Recibí montones de mails felicitándome. Quedé impresionado
por la repercusión mundial que tuvo el film, que recibe un promedio de 200
visitas diarias .” Este film ya se puede ver en websites de Perú, Argentina y
hasta en Rusia, donde hasta originó un intenso debate sobre su significado.
Esperemos que el éxito de Zapatos aliente a Burak Apaydin a seguir filmando, y a
muchos dibujantes a empezar a usar el poder de You Tube, que tiene la
característica de ser irresistible, ya que nadie se niega a ver un video
recomendado por un amigo.
Esta prueba piloto quizás sea el comienzo de una nueva tendencia en el mundo del
dibujo. Ya veremos cuantas otras cosas se pueden hacer combinando dibujo y
filmación, a partir de esta sencilla idea de contar un cartoon hacia atrás. Si
no otra vez prueba que el cartoon no tiene fronteras, la sensibilidad no tiene
nacionalidad y lo que emociona a una persona emociona a todos por igual.

When we are kids, we make a lot of funny questions about life. If later we
remember them, we turn them into cartoons. Maybe a cartoonist is the person who
is still able to reason like a child.
In year 2001, while living one of the biggest economical crisis in Argentina, I
sent to a cartoon contest one cartoon inspired by one of this particular thought
I had as a child . And I got an award , showing Freud was right when he wrote -
in “ The joke and its relation with subconscient” - that laughter and humor is a
human phenomenon which happens when we allow our inner selves to be children
again, not knowing nothing about solemnity.
During year 2001, one not only was left jobless, but also your editors would
call you to ask you for a job . Thousand of Argentineans migrated to other
countries. A friend of mine offered me a job in the USA . But I stayed to draw
more then ever. A short time before the crisis, I had met Marlene Pohle –
present FECO president general ( http://feco.info) – who was in Buenos Aires
for an exhibition of her cartoons at the Alliance Francaise . I interviewed her
for the newspaper Pagina 12 . When she knew I was a cartoonist too, she invited
me to join some fellow cartoonists to found a new branch of FECO in Argentina.
Since then, us, FECO Argentina members, had all the information about every
cartoon exhibition, contest, festival and salon in the world . Instead of
getting desperate for the situation , I drawed desperately. As a result of that,
I got seven awards in two years, and I began to be invited as member of the jury
on several cartoon festivals.
When I read the regulations of Turkish Aydin Dogan Foundation International
Cartoon Contest, I checked on a file of old cartoons based on thoughts I had on
my childhood. And I saw this one legged man in black and white. I felt it was a
little naïve , but I decided to re made it watercolors because I was sure the
idea was original : I é never seen something similar before. And the worst thing
cartoonists can do is do cartoons using ideas already used by another colleague.
I made the work and my kitchen table, preparing my children to leave to school.
I took it to the Post Office thinking it will never arrive in time. But it did.
Some weeks later I got the news that it had been awarded at Aydin Dogan
Foundation. I was invited to Turkey to get the award, with tickets and expenses
paid . It was November 2001, two months after 9- 11, the attack of the Twin
Towers in New York. My flight was in American Airlines, making a long stop in
New York. I was afraid of flying, but Dutch cartoonist Peter Nieuwendijk (a
FECO member himself ) calmed me down saying “ It will not happen twice in two
months”, and I got on board. I talked about the World Center attack with the
crewmembers, and they told me they were offered the chance to have holidays to
overcome the panic , but almost none took it, for fear of losing the expense
wages . The airlines have given them antiterrorist training , in long classes of
45 minutes , and they were telling me this while opening juice cartons with
their own cutters with huge blades, while me and the passengers were taken away
our tweezers and nail cutters . A soon as I arrived to New York – a sad ,
mourning city, then - I went to see Ground Zero, the zone of devastation where
the Twin Towers were. It was still smoking and smelling burning rubbish. All the
area was of the same whitish color, covered with dust and ashes. On the streets
there were thousands of portraits of missing people, pasted on post, walls and
displays on stations. I took lots of pictures and wrote an article which was
published in Para Ti magazine.
When I arrived to Turkey, they were waiting for me in the candlelit restaurant
of the Ankara Hilton Hotel, listening to medieval music with flutes and harps. I
had there the great honour of meeting multiawarded cartoonists as Eythor
Steffanson from Iceland, Julian Pena Pai from Romania, Oleg Dergatchov from
Ucrania, Andrzej Graniak from Polland , Rezaei Paiman from Iran and enormously
talented Turkish cartoonist Tan Oral, among others . We were treated as sultans,
and the awards ceremony took place on a beautiful Belle Époque opera house with
the presence of the President of Turkish Parliament and the Ministry of Culture
. One of the trophies was my cartoon, “ Zapatos” , engraved in a bronze plaque,
meant to last forever .
In the year 2006, I got an mail from the young Turkish filmmaker Burak Apaydin
saying a friend of him has sent him my cartoon Zapatos, and that he wanted to
make a film about it. I asked him what kind of film, and he said “ I want to
tell the store of what happened before” , filmed with actors, being my cartoon
the final scene . Out of sheer curiosity I said yes, as long as he sent me the
film when it was finished. He told me he spent months before figuring out who
was the author of the cartoon. He had a low resolution version and he couldn´t
read my signature well. Burak told me later that when he told his crew that I
said yes to the project “they had their heads in the ceiling “ , meaning they
were very happy .
In July 2007 Burak contacted me again saying the film was finally done,
participated in festivals, and was show non Turkish TV with great success. But
he hasd some financial problems and couldn’t send me a video by regular post.
So, I suggested him to post in You Tube. He did, and I was I saw the film, I was
so moved that sent the link to all my friend and colleagues . They sent me lots
of congratulations and letters telling me this idea was wonderful, and they sent
the link to their contacts. I got letters from India, China, Peru and Australia
because of this film, and websites from Bosnia, Peru and Colombia asked me
permission to post this link in their blogs.
The 1st August. Clarín newspaper of Argentina made an article on this film,
titled “From argentine cartoon to Turkish film: a filmmaker posted it in New
Tube and in five days it got 2000 visits” (http://www.clarin.com/diario/2007/08/01/sociedad/s-04102.htm). A lot of
collegues wrote me saying they were seeing a new kind of art here the
combination of cartoon and film.. A week after being posted in You Tube, the
film had 2400 visits and was favorited 30 times. The director is being invited
to show it in films festival, like the one in Banja Luka, Bosnia .
Reasons of its success
The filming of Zapatos is very well done. It took Burak one month to find the
ideal actor, until yhey found Fehmi Zubeyir Suzen, an actor who lost one limb in
the Turkish Army, and is in the present a basketball player in a handicapped
league. A crew of 13 people worked during a week on the film, and Burka wants to
thank the participation Harun Halici and Didem Acar in it. ”We worked very hard
but enjoyed every minute of it “he says. When they finished the film, they went
to a concert of famous classic and jazz pianist and compositor, Gulden Goksen.
They told her they wanted her to make the music, and she said she would do it if
she liked the film. She liked it and said yes. Gulden is a well known artist, a
soloist in several orchestras of different countries ,a Prokofiev and jazz
interpreter who won several awards for composing original music for films. The
moving quality of her music is what gave extra strength to the film, from the
mischievous climate of intrigue of the beginning to the poetry and compassion of

The film was shot in Ankara, the edition took one month, it was made in Format
DV color, lasts 4, 26 minutes and the edition system was Final Cut.
“My previous works are very dark compared to Zapatos “says the director “I loved
being able to say something about the world in this film. In my previous films I
filmed about politics and the situation in Turkey. Now I let myself get caught
by the things that draw my attention, as this cartoon was. This cartoon inspired
me, and this film is a landmark in my career. I have lots of letters full of
congratulations from the entire world “
The film gets around 200 new extra viewers per day, and was posted in websites
of Peru, Argentina and Russia, where it also originated a strong debate over its
meaning.
Let´s hope the attention got by Zapatos makes Burak stimulated to go on filming
and may inspire more cartoonists to use the irresistible power of You Tube,
based on the fact that nobody resist the invitation to look a short, nice film.
Maybe this is the beginning of a new form of art combining cartoons and filming
based on the simple idea of telling a cartoon backwards. If not the case , it
shows once more that cartoons have no frontiers, sensibility has no nationality
and all that moves one person, moves everybody in the same way
