Mission Statement
Our Primary Mission Is To Make Editorial Cartoonists
The Most Powerful People In The World
While recognizing the obligation of sovereign governments to formulate domestic
law and their constitutional responsibilities to maintain civil discipline,
governments are also obligated by domestic law and international conventions to
provide for their citizens the protection of basic human rights and the
application of internationally recognized journalistic freedoms and privileges.
Notwithstanding this, journalists must, from time to time, be protected and
defended against irregular political and/or militant elements that would deprive
them of their basic human and civil rights. The Cartoonists Rights Network's
mission is the protection of editorial and humor cartoonists from any form of
human or civil rights abuses.
The Cartoonists Rights Network will carry out this mission through the following
strategies:
1. Lobby directly with the entities that threaten the rights of editorial and
humor cartoonists. The Cartoonists Rights Network will facilitate the gathering,
coordinating and exhange of information about the plight of at-risk editorial or
humor cartoonists and bring this information to the public other concerned
agencies and the cartooning world everywhere. The cartoonists Rights Network
will seek the release and rights of all editorial and humor cartoonists
improperly detained or molested.
2. Train at-risk journalists in defensive lifestyles and survival techniques,
making safer the journalist and his or her family in the face of armed violence,
the threat of violence or the deprivation of human and civil rights.
3. Create a support program to assist the families of cartoonists under legal
attack, killed, wrongfully imprisoned or arrested, disappeared, injured, or
otherwise illegally or improperly deprived of their means of gaining a
livelihood though the exercise of their professions.
4. Provide cartoon professionals with marketing outlets for their works on a
international scale in order to enhance the public awareness of the value and
global contribution of editorial journalists to democratic, informed political
processes.
5. Undertake any other activities or projects that will promote the furtherance
of the goals stated above.
